New Delhi: Finally, India received the first emergency covid relief supplies arrive from the us “stand with India” this morning as the country is fighting a deadly second wave that has strained the healthcare system. More than 3 lakh cases are getting added to the country’s caseload every day for more than a week, and SOS messages for hospital beds and medical oxygen have flooded social media.

With the greater than 400 oxygen cylinders, nearly one million rapid coronavirus test kits, and other hospital equipment, a super galaxy military transporter landed at Delhi’s international airport this morning, news agency AFP reported.

In a tweet, American Embassy shared photos of the elements and said: “The first of several emergency COVID-19 comfort shipments from the US has arrived in India! Building on over 70 years of cooperation, the US stands with India as we combat the COVID-19 pandemic collectively. #USIndiaDosti (sic).”

Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden pledged sustained support to India in its fight against Covid. “Just as India sent assistance to the United States as our hospitals were strained early in the pandemic, we are determined to help India in its time of need,” Mr Biden said in a tweet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr. Biden had a telephonic communication on Monday to speak about the Covid scenario in each of the countries. “We mentioned the evolving COVID situation in each country in detail. I thanked President Biden for the aid being furnished by using the United States to India,” PM Modi said rapidly after the meeting.

In a declaration, the White House said: “The President pledged America’s steadfast aid for the human beings of India who’ve been impacted by the current surge in COVID-19 instances… The USA is presenting a variety of emergency assistance, such as oxygen-associated elements, vaccine materials, and therapeutics”.

With 1.83 crore total cases, India has logged the second highest number of cases after the United States that has recorded 3.22 crore infections so far. More than 5.7 lakh people have died in US since the start of the pandemic; 2.04 lakh deaths have been recorded in India.

Opposition leaders have criticised the government for failing to improve country’s health infrastructure despite having a year to prepare. Shortage of medical oxygen, vaccines and medicines have been red-flagged by several states.

As cases continue to rise, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, and several other nations have also resolved to help India.
